Alright, I can see that. I find this game has a core part that is broken.

There is a different between good streamlining and bad streamlining. I find AH3rd to have streamlined what I like about AH2nd and EH out of the game. Also, instead of good challenges AH3rd rush the players while beneficial investigator actions are stuck behind RNG wall. The mytho cups just out paces you so fast while still being very overpowering affects in it. AH3rd discourage branching game play while in AH3rd. I find All my games blind into each other so I play them the same way the game dictates me to play.

AH3rd is convoluted for me when increasing the number of players.

Comparing it to pandemic and it is still broken. It does not have the buffer that pandemic have. Pandemic have more spaces to keep the challenge increasing at a good pace. While they space out the epidemic cards. Those factors make it so that even through the pacing increase by then the player had time to prep and deal with branching game play.

They reason some many of us are loud about our problems with AH3rd is that we see a game that can be good if it is fixed up a bit. At it now I would say AH3rd is more akin to a roll and move games than AH2nd and EH.

Just dropping in to say that it IS possible to discuss a game you dislike without referring to it as broken. I mean, the game works, so it's obviously not "broken." There may be design choices that you don't care for, but that in and of itself does not mean a game is broken.

And let's be honest: referring to AH3 as a "roll and move" is silly. If you don't like it, that's fine. But a roll and move? C'mon.

Edit: also, there are many of us who see AH3 as being great the way it is. We don't want to see it changed into EH or AH2. Those games already exist, so why do we need this one to be more like them? The system is great as is.

I tried a couple of times and gave up. I think it would be a great as a rules lite RPG system but they never went that route, I could never get people to excited about it so maybe they were right. I think it would be a great dungeon crawler or hex crawler too.

I know that NORMAL monsters must be shuffle all the time... that's why I sleeved ALL of them.

but, question to experienced players with 4+ expansions and 30+ games... are EPIC monsters sometimes shuffle?

You could completely change roles every single game.

You probably SHOULD change roles every game (or thereabouts), based on how things are set up for that particular session. Sticking to the same two no matter what the board looks like could potentially bite you in some scenarios. Be flexible.

Is this written in the rules? Does this work like a character drafting card before each play through (month?)

You are free to swap characters freely before the game starts. Read the set up rules, they are in a specific order. You get to see certain steps of setup before making certain decisions. You can decide how you want to select characters. We made it so that we each started with our last character and then decided if we wanted to swap someone out. Then that swapped character was available to swap. We did this until everyone was satisfied. Funny enough, three of us never changed characters. So this whole process was unnecessarily defined.

Meanwhile our group decided by committee which characters we thought should be in the next session, and then discussed who would get which role this time (often trying to make sure everyone had a shot at each character, rather than latching onto our faves).

But yes, in Legacy, you set up the whole board, hand out cards, and THEN decide which characters you're fielding for the session. This is written in the rules in that you follow the setup rules exactly, and character-choosing is one of the last steps.

I think there's a certain degree of playstyle factoring in here, as well. In other asymmetrical games, some factions simply work well with some players and other factions don't. For example, a lot of people think Machines are broken in Cry Havoc and can't win. I win so routinely with them in my group that I'm actively encouraged to not play them. The same thing happens in non-asymmetrical games like Cosmic Encounter, where some players, especially newer ones, think aliens like Macron are totally OP, while they think others are impossible to win with.

The fact is that certain factions will simply work better with people to whom their playstyle is internalized. A lot of people that can win with WA or the Vagabond or Riverfolk just can't handle the long-term planning that the Eyrie requires to maintain the Decree. That planning involves not only maintaining it, but knowing when it's going to crash and planning around it, and even planning to crash at a certain point that's advantageous to you. That's a talent and not everyone can do it.

Similarly, the Riverfolk are an inherently social faction. You not only have to convince people to use your services, but have to set your prices so that they think they're getting a deal which outweighs the loss of dudes and potential benefits to you. That takes some understanding of the people you're playing with, as well as an assessment of the current state of the game. Those aren't abilities that everyone possesses, so the Riverfolk may feel underpowered to them because they can't make them work well. But really it may just be that the Otters' method of play isn't what they're adept with.

My understanding is that a deed can happen at any time on your turn, even during engagements, so that seems like an escape plan that would work.

Thread: Eldritch Horror:: Variants:: Ancient Ones Only variants?

Hi everyone! Just played my third game of EH and I really like it, but man, it's long. It keeps me from bringing it to the table more often. I just added Forsaken Lore to the game and I enjoy the extra cards.

In our last game, we beat Yog-Sothoth. We didn't get the mystery objective that used the deck, and he didn't awake, so we didn't get to use any of his special deck. This left me feeling a little bummed...a whole set of unused mechanics. Replayable, sure, but I have another three expansions just waiting to join the fun to add even more AOs, so at my current rate I will repeat AOs in 8 years lol.

So I started wondering...has anyone thought about, or already made, a variant that is just about fighting the Ancient Ones? I didn't find anything in my initial searches. I started brainstorming and made a draft for Shub, trying to think of a way to make the battle interesting and simulate some build up of items like during the game. Before I inevitably get too carried away, if this has been done, or if this sounds like a waste of time...I just thought I'd reach out to the community. My goal was to make a 30 to 60 minute adventure that assumes the AO woke up, but you knew it was coming so you prepared a little. And now you are humanities last hope.

Thanks, any thoughts are welcome.

Have they indicated what they will do with unique allies who appear as heroes, yet? With Spiderwoman we'll have our first mandatory one, unless they go with two different Spiderwoman's.

Wow, what an awesome mechanic and theme! Everyone I've played this has loved the unique magnet movements. The recent success of Stranger Things in pop culture lends itself well to the idea of an abducted/lost child in an upside-down/duskworld. To be more fully immersed in and feel like these kids are constantly at risk of being lost in the world of a sinister being, some dark yet playful paint tones worked beautifully to create a cohesion.

The game is highly successful, so I believe that one will be too.
This means, there is a high chance that it will be available later, so I would wait.
I personally will wait anyway, as the German version will come out a year later. If I‘m not finished then (which is likely) I will probably wait, depending on how much is left.

I finally finished painting the core box minis using your guides. Thanks again.
I started the menhirs prior to finding this thread, so I went in a little differentdirection with the colors, but I think they turned out pretty good.
I tried to match the colors the best I could using the Citadel paints that I had. Also I am terrible at painting eyes.
What do you think?

A separate thread as this question has come up an awful lot.

If you go onto the Kickstarter comments section, Collaborator Jordan Luminais confirmed that the pledge manager definitely will re-open (for existing backers).

They'd previously said that it probably would re-open, but they couldn't guarantee it. They're now saying it will re-open.

Good news for those hovering on the fence.

I missed the KS but can still do a late pre-order, will I still be eligable for the pledge manager re-open?
I want all the expansions but at over $300 price tag I may just go with base game and get the expansions when it re-opens later in the year - is this something I could do?
