Hey there Kickers, and welcome to this weeks galactic edition of Kick the Table. There are, as I write this, 118 live Kickstarter Campaigns in the Tabletop Games category. Of these 38 (32.2%) have already funded. Let's take a look!
We'll start with a few campaigns that are ending in the next week:
:star: Almost nothing worth mentioning. 30 days ago was the lead-up to Christmas so that's not entirely unexpected. There's a couple of honorary mentions.
:star: If you hurry you can jump on board the second-shot campaign for the small space mining game Mine, All Mine!.
:star: The Mistborn Allomancy Dice project has done very well and only needs a little nudge to unlock Brass (the final basic allomantic metal). I have high hopes that a Mistborn (or any Cosmere property) board game could be in our futures.
:star: And finally, the Wallenstein Big Box campaign has done well for itself.
Is this the end for Tabletop Games on Kickstarter? Of course not. Next up we'll take a look at some campaigns that launched last week:
:star: WYSIWYG: Among Thieves - is a dice game that has you trying to take matching sets of loot to get "solid" with a fence. Of course, being a game about thieves, you can steal each others loot.
:star: Conan - A tactical miniatures game in which you must interview celebrity guests and...NO. Of course, this is Conan: The Barbarian and a band of cohorts playing a campaign of adventures against a Hyborian overlord. You KNOW a campaign is going to be good when it unlocks the "5 free tencacles" stretch goal. Seriously though, if you want a Descent/Imperial Assault in Conan-land, this looks like it packs a tonne of value into your pledge.
:star: Orléans - is a bag-builder/worker placement/engine building style game. You start the game with 4 workers and you place them out on your own personal board, either gaining resources, additional workers, or moving around on a shared board picking up goods and dropping trading posts. There is also another shared board that takes workers permanently in exchange for money allowing you to gather finances and "thin out" your bag to streamline it in one direction or the other. There's been a lot of buzz about this one so check it out.
:star: The Kingswood - as the leader of one of 4 great houses (Llama, Sloth, Manatee, and Ostrich), you must connect your forts to the treasure at the heart of the kingswood to claim gold and win the game. Each turn you pick one of 5 roles which allows you influence the state of the board. If you and an opponent pick the same role, the effect is reduced for both of you so guessing what your opponent is going to do is crucial. There's a heavy tile-placement aspect to the game with ability to play tiles on top of other, previously placed, tiles. The art looks cutesy but the game looks like it might be pretty cutthroat.
:star: Playing Lean - Learn about Lean Startup management techniques while playing a board game. Lead your team as they go from idea to successful product. A grid of customers represents various layers of customer (from early adopters to the majority) with hidden desires. You must experiment to find out what they want, build a minimum viable product that will appeal to them and get up and running. The first to capture "The Majority" wins.
:star: Krakatoa - So...imagine that a volcano exploded and d12s were ejected into the atmosphere and that's approximately what Krakatoa is about. Each face on the d12 has one of three colors on it and sets of 3 of these are worth points. On your turn you throw all 9 (possibly twice) and then pick up 3 at a time to rethrow. After each throw you score so maximizing the way these are thrown is key (and it sounds like you can, or indeed must, knock the previously thrown dice around).
:star: Nearspace - imagine a mini's game where the little hunks of plastic don't need painting and are already in your home. Stellar Conquest is a game of Stellar Conquest where the ships are ordinary dice. The number of sides and the color of each die determine what type of ship it is. Players use these ships to duke it out on an arena of cards. For an additional $20 they'll ship you a bag of 40 random dice as well!
:star: The King's Abbey - A worker placement game where your workers are dice. In this case 10 d6s. Each turn you will roll these "monks" and then assign them out to bring in peasants, train clergy, defend the abbey, collect resources, construct things and go on crusades. Whoever collects the most prestige over 7 rounds wins.
:star: The 5th Land - is an area control game set in a post-apocalyptic flooded earth where land is the most valuable resource. Use soldiers, ships and planes to capture and control 5 land masses to win. There is also a global market and a resource trading aspect to the game.
:star: Exodus: Edge of Extinction - Exodus: Proxima Centauri is a very successful space themed 4X game published in 2012. This expansion adds 6 unique playable factions, each with their own powers and a host of other options. You can also pick up a copy of the base game while you're at it.
:star: Demi: Labyrinth of the Gods - a bunch characters, all children of Greek gods, have been invited to a labyrinth. Once there they travel as a party from room to room encountering monsters, collecting artifacts and levelling up. Each room you leave is replaced with a harder room from the next level so the game gets tougher as you do. From the video it feels a little bit like one of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Games except that you move and deal with every encounter as a group.
:star: Battle of Durak - is a card game of fantasy combat. Each player takes one of the classes (Mage, Barbarian, Thief, or Necromancer) and their corresponding skill cards. You also get a hand of battle cards. Players then use their unique skills and battle cards to defeat each other in one-on-one combat. If the attacker wins the defender must take all of the cards played into their hand and the first player to empty their hand wins.
:star: Zombie Apocalypse Geocaching - is a zombie themed expansion to Cache Me If You Can! The Geocaching Board Game. You win by being the best geo-cacher but if a zombie lands you, you become a zombie. But don't worry, you can still win by being the best zombie geo-cacher, as long as there's none of those pesky living left standing around at the end of the game.
:star: Psycho!Therapist - try to cure patients with various problems (an obnoxious school cafeteria worker with medication that gives them an urge to prank call their in-laws is the example from the video) using the tools in your hand. The success (or failure) of your treatment is a die roll that is (slightly) affected by the cards you played so this is a party game with the fun coming from how you and your friends describe the various treatments that you put into place.
:star: Necronauts - "Necro" means dead and "naut" means sailor but this is not a Pirates of the Caribbean game (naut can also mean explorer). In Necronauts, one player is going to play a "Deity of Death" and control a horde of monstrosities inhabiting the Realm of Death while 1-3 other players will each lead a team of Micronauts into the Realm of Death to do battle. This is realized with a whole host of cool looking miniatures, boards, cards and dice with every component (except the dice) having a very black and white color motif. It's interesting that the players all seem to lead customized squads of characters instead of single ones and characters that die are permanently dead (if you die in the Realm of Death that does sound pretty permanent).
:star: Pocket Imperium - A while ago I had regular game nights where we had only 3 players (interestingly this has come back around) and I went looking for good 3-player games. I kept hearing mention of this tiny 4X print'n'play space game called Pocket Imperium. I read up about it and it sounded really cool and there were rumors that it was going to get picked up and published. The game features a small modular gameboard showing systems of various sizes and open space and players compete round after round to control these systems using their ships. Each round you must order 3 cards (Expand, Explore, Exterminate) and then simultaneously reveal them in that order. As each card is resolved it's strength is determined by how many players played it at the same time. i.e. If 2 players play "Explore" then they each get to move two fleets but if one player plays it alone they get to move 3 fleets. At the end of each round, each players gets to pick one tile which will score (but it scores for everyone on the tile) and whoever owns the center tile gets to pick a second tile to score (making it supremely valuable). I backed this instantly as it sounds like a Tiny Epic Kingdoms level of awesomeness.
:star: Reign of Nations - 7 fantasy/sci-fi nations, locked in a world-wide struggle of conquest.

It's a very interesting story, Future Boy, but there's one little thing that doesn't make sense. If the me in the future is now in the past, how could you possibly know about it?
We'll start with a few campaigns that are ending in the next week:
:star: Almost nothing worth mentioning. 30 days ago was the lead-up to Christmas so that's not entirely unexpected. There's a couple of honorary mentions.
:star: If you hurry you can jump on board the second-shot campaign for the small space mining game Mine, All Mine!.
:star: The Mistborn Allomancy Dice project has done very well and only needs a little nudge to unlock Brass (the final basic allomantic metal). I have high hopes that a Mistborn (or any Cosmere property) board game could be in our futures.
:star: And finally, the Wallenstein Big Box campaign has done well for itself.
Is this the end for Tabletop Games on Kickstarter? Of course not. Next up we'll take a look at some campaigns that launched last week:
:star: WYSIWYG: Among Thieves - is a dice game that has you trying to take matching sets of loot to get "solid" with a fence. Of course, being a game about thieves, you can steal each others loot.
:star: Conan - A tactical miniatures game in which you must interview celebrity guests and...NO. Of course, this is Conan: The Barbarian and a band of cohorts playing a campaign of adventures against a Hyborian overlord. You KNOW a campaign is going to be good when it unlocks the "5 free tencacles" stretch goal. Seriously though, if you want a Descent/Imperial Assault in Conan-land, this looks like it packs a tonne of value into your pledge.
:star: Orléans - is a bag-builder/worker placement/engine building style game. You start the game with 4 workers and you place them out on your own personal board, either gaining resources, additional workers, or moving around on a shared board picking up goods and dropping trading posts. There is also another shared board that takes workers permanently in exchange for money allowing you to gather finances and "thin out" your bag to streamline it in one direction or the other. There's been a lot of buzz about this one so check it out.
:star: The Kingswood - as the leader of one of 4 great houses (Llama, Sloth, Manatee, and Ostrich), you must connect your forts to the treasure at the heart of the kingswood to claim gold and win the game. Each turn you pick one of 5 roles which allows you influence the state of the board. If you and an opponent pick the same role, the effect is reduced for both of you so guessing what your opponent is going to do is crucial. There's a heavy tile-placement aspect to the game with ability to play tiles on top of other, previously placed, tiles. The art looks cutesy but the game looks like it might be pretty cutthroat.
:star: Playing Lean - Learn about Lean Startup management techniques while playing a board game. Lead your team as they go from idea to successful product. A grid of customers represents various layers of customer (from early adopters to the majority) with hidden desires. You must experiment to find out what they want, build a minimum viable product that will appeal to them and get up and running. The first to capture "The Majority" wins.
:star: Krakatoa - So...imagine that a volcano exploded and d12s were ejected into the atmosphere and that's approximately what Krakatoa is about. Each face on the d12 has one of three colors on it and sets of 3 of these are worth points. On your turn you throw all 9 (possibly twice) and then pick up 3 at a time to rethrow. After each throw you score so maximizing the way these are thrown is key (and it sounds like you can, or indeed must, knock the previously thrown dice around).
:star: Nearspace - imagine a mini's game where the little hunks of plastic don't need painting and are already in your home. Stellar Conquest is a game of Stellar Conquest where the ships are ordinary dice. The number of sides and the color of each die determine what type of ship it is. Players use these ships to duke it out on an arena of cards. For an additional $20 they'll ship you a bag of 40 random dice as well!
:star: The King's Abbey - A worker placement game where your workers are dice. In this case 10 d6s. Each turn you will roll these "monks" and then assign them out to bring in peasants, train clergy, defend the abbey, collect resources, construct things and go on crusades. Whoever collects the most prestige over 7 rounds wins.
:star: The 5th Land - is an area control game set in a post-apocalyptic flooded earth where land is the most valuable resource. Use soldiers, ships and planes to capture and control 5 land masses to win. There is also a global market and a resource trading aspect to the game.
:star: Exodus: Edge of Extinction - Exodus: Proxima Centauri is a very successful space themed 4X game published in 2012. This expansion adds 6 unique playable factions, each with their own powers and a host of other options. You can also pick up a copy of the base game while you're at it.
:star: Demi: Labyrinth of the Gods - a bunch characters, all children of Greek gods, have been invited to a labyrinth. Once there they travel as a party from room to room encountering monsters, collecting artifacts and levelling up. Each room you leave is replaced with a harder room from the next level so the game gets tougher as you do. From the video it feels a little bit like one of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Games except that you move and deal with every encounter as a group.
:star: Battle of Durak - is a card game of fantasy combat. Each player takes one of the classes (Mage, Barbarian, Thief, or Necromancer) and their corresponding skill cards. You also get a hand of battle cards. Players then use their unique skills and battle cards to defeat each other in one-on-one combat. If the attacker wins the defender must take all of the cards played into their hand and the first player to empty their hand wins.
:star: Zombie Apocalypse Geocaching - is a zombie themed expansion to Cache Me If You Can! The Geocaching Board Game. You win by being the best geo-cacher but if a zombie lands you, you become a zombie. But don't worry, you can still win by being the best zombie geo-cacher, as long as there's none of those pesky living left standing around at the end of the game.
:star: Psycho!Therapist - try to cure patients with various problems (an obnoxious school cafeteria worker with medication that gives them an urge to prank call their in-laws is the example from the video) using the tools in your hand. The success (or failure) of your treatment is a die roll that is (slightly) affected by the cards you played so this is a party game with the fun coming from how you and your friends describe the various treatments that you put into place.
:star: Necronauts - "Necro" means dead and "naut" means sailor but this is not a Pirates of the Caribbean game (naut can also mean explorer). In Necronauts, one player is going to play a "Deity of Death" and control a horde of monstrosities inhabiting the Realm of Death while 1-3 other players will each lead a team of Micronauts into the Realm of Death to do battle. This is realized with a whole host of cool looking miniatures, boards, cards and dice with every component (except the dice) having a very black and white color motif. It's interesting that the players all seem to lead customized squads of characters instead of single ones and characters that die are permanently dead (if you die in the Realm of Death that does sound pretty permanent).
:star: Pocket Imperium - A while ago I had regular game nights where we had only 3 players (interestingly this has come back around) and I went looking for good 3-player games. I kept hearing mention of this tiny 4X print'n'play space game called Pocket Imperium. I read up about it and it sounded really cool and there were rumors that it was going to get picked up and published. The game features a small modular gameboard showing systems of various sizes and open space and players compete round after round to control these systems using their ships. Each round you must order 3 cards (Expand, Explore, Exterminate) and then simultaneously reveal them in that order. As each card is resolved it's strength is determined by how many players played it at the same time. i.e. If 2 players play "Explore" then they each get to move two fleets but if one player plays it alone they get to move 3 fleets. At the end of each round, each players gets to pick one tile which will score (but it scores for everyone on the tile) and whoever owns the center tile gets to pick a second tile to score (making it supremely valuable). I backed this instantly as it sounds like a Tiny Epic Kingdoms level of awesomeness.
:star: Reign of Nations - 7 fantasy/sci-fi nations, locked in a world-wide struggle of conquest.
