You only missed one point: the entire party shares the experience; it is not assigned to a single Hero.If the second player must move to attack, if possible he should try to attack from an unexplored edge of a tile so that you have a chance of avoiding the next encounter. Even better is if the hero can make a ranged attack from his starting square, so that he can attack first and then move to explore.
If your Hero is on a corner adjacent to two unexplored edges, you may explore either edge. This is handy in case your Herobecomes immobilised, because you will still be able to explore on that Hero's next turn.
