They are fine. You get more bang for the buck with Khazad-dum than 'normal' APs, and the general consensus is that the scenarios in K-d are better than in many of the APs.
Just be aware that if you like the game (and many find it frustrating - check the forums for advice if you do), you will end up buying more stuff anyway.
