I think the most confusing aspect of the hot spots is that they are tied to coordinates. They have a location, so people expect something to happen at this location. Maybe a hotspot track would work better for some, or instead of assigning random coordinates, place hotspots in a systematic order across the board (starting at 1-1 and putting them next to each other at 1-2, 1-3 etc.). This adds, however, extra rules which do not improve anything about the game, except it becomes more clear that hot spots are abstract.
