I've found that you can maintain higher tension by keeping an eye on how many cards are left, and announcing how many turns are left once it starts to get low.
If it just happens all of the sudden then yeah, it can be anti-climactic. Then again, anti-climax is a known problem with this game when you win anyway. One of the few games I know where it's kind of more fun to lose.
