Turns out for several years now I had completely missed the 2 dice rule in unarmed combat... I'VE BEEN PLAYING IT ALL WRONG THIS WHOLE TIME! ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!!
This really does explain an awful lot, particularly the motivation to search for items, and the reactions of some of the peeps I've played it with in the past.
All this in mind, I'm "preparing the bribes" to get my wife to play with me tonight...and no, this is NOT a reflection of Zombie Plague, mind, though. Mrs CJ just isn't a gamer, so anything from Tiddlywinks to Tigris and Euphrates requires a trip to our local Cold Stone icecreamery for gamewise negotiations.
I'll be writing a better, less whiney review of the new material shortly (I think the word "glowing" will be appropriate) shortly.
Again, thanks for clearing this up for me, and another big thank you to Zombierob, who helped me to purchase a .pdf copy of the comic (muchly appreciated in my peculiar circumstance!!)
