I haven't necessarily felt that way, especially as we gain more experience and characters strengths become more apparent. Outside of Roaches, we use abilities in most combat situations. With a lot of the abilities, the mice make up the cheese that they spend. Nez almost always uses Battle Squeak for the extra die. Filch uses Energy Rush in about half of his fights. Maginos tends to use Meeps or First Aid almost every battle as well (cheese isn't as much of an issue with him for us because he rolls 3 dice for combat due to weapon bonuses). And Lily uses Accurate Shot for the big guys, but I think we'll use Aimed Shot a bunch once she levels up (it would help if we could snag a decent bow for her).

As for positioning, we tend to analyze how the Minions are placed as soon as we enter the room. If any of our heroes are weak, etc., then we'll draw some of the Minions off in different directions. If there is a danger of being Stunned, then we throw Nez in that direction while some of the other Heroes try to draw off the other Minions. Subtle things, but they're still there.

We also don't just try to kill everything as fast as we can necessarily. We like to be able to Search for plenty of items. If the remaining Minions left are manageable, then we'll have certain players start Searching while others deal with the Minions. In particular, we'll save Rats for Finch. Again, subtle things, but still some decision making.

Overall, there is a lot of "kill as many as you can, as fast as you can" but there is still a bunch of small subtle decisions along the way...
