I try to avoid alphanism on my part by choosing straight forwards character types for newbies and turning to the group as a whole to discuss alternative action choices when a newbie does not know what to do with their character.

For example, I asked a former military vet if he knew who Danny Trejo is. He said "Yes! He's a really great actor!" I replied "and he also makes great tacos! I want to go to his taco stand sometime! Here, you play him!" and I passed him my Zombicide (2nd Edition): Danny Trejo – Badass Survivor and Zombie Set box and explained Danny's melee machete attacks ("super!"). Knowing that Danny is merely strongish at the start until he hits Barbarian at orange level, I handed Elle to his wife and explained that her Sniper skill will save Danny by clearing out any leftover zombies that Danny's melee attacks fails to erase. Those two players were pretty much set from then onwards!

My sister-in-law is nowhere near alpha level, and often needs coaching on play strategy. My brother is pretty good at strategy and between the two of us we can usually give her two suggestions, then give pros and cons regarding them until she decides. She enjoys cooperative games (particularly enjoys playing snipers) because she knows she can trust our suggestions since if the zombies win, ALL of us lose!
